Causes of Male Pattern Hair Loss

Dr. Ziering and his staff go out of their way to educate male patients on the reasons for male pattern hair loss, and the solutions available through the Ziering Medical Group.

DHT is a hormone associated with sexual characteristics in males, and it could be a contributing factor to male pattern hair loss. The presence of DHT can stunt the growth of hair follicles until growth stops completely.

Hair Transplant Procedures

Hair Transplant Surgery Procedure

Ziering Medical primarily performs surgical procedures known as Follicular Unit Transplantations (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extractions (FUE). These procedures are done using local anesthesia and innovative technology usually developed by Dr. Ziering himself.

The four general steps in a hair replacement procedure are:

Step 1

Gathering Donor Follicles

The donor zone is identified and prepared for harvesting. There are two basic methods of harvesting your donor hair and FUT Strip Harvesting and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Step 2

Microscopic Dissection

With FUT Strip Harvest procedures, the donor strip is placed under the Ziering Scope which is designed specifically for hair restoration surgery. Then the donor strip is dissected into individual follicular units of one to four hairs..

Step 3

Creation of the Recipient Sites

Your hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair transplant plan he has designed specifically for you. This is where artistry is key and separates an average result from an amazing result.

Step 4

Placement of the Hair Grafts

Finally, your hair grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp by a surgical technician who places each graft carefully and meticulously into those recipient sites. Surgical hair restoration is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia.

To ensure precise results. Ziering Medical utilizes either the SAFE or ARTAS systems to remove follicles in an FUE.

Once your procedure is complete, it will take approximately four months for your grafted hair follicles to start growing on a normal cycle. Your transplanted follicles will grow for at least 10 to 12 months after your surgery is completed.

Thanks to the Ziering Medical’s innovative procedures and techniques, this sort of hair transplant surgery feels and looks completely natural.

The Stages of Male Pattern Baldness

Stage 1

The front of the hairline starts to show noticeable recession.

Stage 2

The recession becomes increasingly more noticeable and it becomes obvious that the hair is not growing back fast enough.

Stage 3

The top of the head starts to show a bald spot. This could also be the first stage of the process if there is no noticeable recession.

Stage 4

The hair on the crown is completely gone and the patient is left with no hair on top at all.

The Anagen Phase

The most active time of growth for male hair follicles is referred to as the Anagen phase. This is a phase that can last anywhere from two to six years and sees an average growth period of three years for normal, healthy hair. On average, approximately 80 percent of all follicles are in the Anagen phase simultaneously. When the growth period is less than two years, that opens the door for balding.

The Catagen Phase

As a male’s hair transitions from healthy to balding, it passes through the Catagen phase. On a healthy head of hair, up to four percent of all hair follicles are in the Catagen phase. But when the body starts to transition to balding, this phase takes over a larger number of follicles. During this phase, the hair will stop growing for anywhere from two to three weeks, but it is not yet falling out.

The Telogen Phase

The Telogen phase is the point where hair starts to fall out. We always like to remind patients that 10 to 14 percent of our entire head of hair is in this stage at all times. That is why we see hair on our pillow in the morning, or in the shower drain. Hair follicles will usually remain in this transitional phase for as long as 100. But when that 10 to 14 percent ratio starts to rise, the body begins to shed hair faster than it can be replaced, and that is when it is time to talk to Dr. Ziering.
